The Omicron Virus: Is it really fatal?

The new COVID-19 variants since the epidemic began, 19 variations have appeared on a regular basis. Some have faded away without leaving much of an impact, while others, such as Delta, have totally taken over.

The Omicron variant, first identified in Botswana and South Africa in November, has spread rapidly around the world in recent weeks, outpacing any previously known form of the coronavirus. While scientists are still learning about Omicron, the variant is already generating an increase in new cases, which might also overwhelm many hospital systems around the world. Among the alterations, Omicron is more transmissible and more powerful in evading existing antibodies. At the same time, Omicron induces a variety of symptoms and appears to result in less severe disease.

Nonetheless, different strains of SARS-CoV-2 have significant similarities, and most of the basic public health advice—get vaccinated, wear a mask—remains unchanged. Here's what the most recent study says about remaining safe in the Omicron era.

Is it true that Omicron causes less serious infection than Delta?

In South Africa, where Omicron was discovered in November 2021, a private health insurance administrator stated in mid-December that adults infected with Omicron were 29% less likely to be hospitalized than adults infected several months earlier. According to a summary of study provided on December 31, 2021 by the U.K. Health Security Agency, the rate of hospital admission among people who went to the emergency room with Omicron was one-third that of Delta.

According to the Western case study, Omicron appears to be less severe than Delta in all age categories, including individuals over 65 and toddlers too young to be vaccinated.

Bangladesh has reported nine more occurrences of the coronavirus Omicron variant, bringing the total number of cases in the country to a total of 30 till January 10th, 2022 according to The Dhaka Tribune. The information was made public by the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data, a non-profit organization based in Germany (GISAID). GISAID is a global science project and major source that provides open access to influenza virus and coronavirus genomic data.

On December 11, the first cases of the Omicron strain were discovered in Bangladesh. After returning from Zimbabwe, two female national team cricketers became infected with the virus.

Why is Omicron dangerous if it’s less severe than Delta?

According to a Danish study that has not yet been peer reviewed, Omicron is two to four times more contagious than Delta. It's also better at evading the antibodies elicited by vaccines, which is why it's producing more outbreaks.

Unlike prior variations, Omicron appears to be less capable of infecting lung cells, making it less harmful and the symptoms less severe. According to certain research, viral loads are much lower in the lungs of Omicron-infected rodents. However, Omicron appears to replicate more than a hundred times quicker than Delta in the upper respiratory system, which encompasses the nose and sinuses.

Do we still need to disinfect surfaces and maintain social distance?

Omicron, like previous variations, is mostly airborne, and scientists think that cleaning down surfaces is likely to be more work than it's worth. According to Abraar Karan, an infectious diseases doctor at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, the six-foot rule is more of a caution that being close to an infected person increases the potential of transmission.
